Customer Case Study – Euromedic | Comsys

Business Requirements

Euromedic Ireland is Ireland’s leading provider of medical scans. Euromedic operates two centres in Dublin, one in Cork City and one in Kilkenny City as well as two hospital based centres in Sligo and Belfast. The sites use an application called Centricity RISi from GE.

Due to the ongoing successful growth of Euromedic Ireland, there has been an increase in the amount of data being generated and the demands on the server and storage technology increased significantly.

To facilitate future growth, Euromedic Ireland had a number of requirements to fulfill around the upgrading of their IT server and storage infrastructure, all of which had to be scalable, with very high levels of performance.

The Solution – Project Detail

To meet Euromedic Ireland’s requirements, Comsys implemented an end-to-end solution that consisted of architecture design, technical implementation, staff training and long term support.

Specifically, the solution involved deploying a virtualised solution using VMware ESX 5.1 running on two HP DL380s. The RISi application now runs on a virtual machine with a duplicate VM on another physical server allowing excellent high availability capability and vastly improved performance.

This was the first instance of RISi being run in a virtual server anywhere in EMEA. VMware was chosen as the virtualisation platform because it had the ability to deliver the high level of IO capability that the application required.

The storage environment solution consisted of an EMC VNX5100 SAN with 20 TB of fibre attached SAS disks and 24 port Brocade 300B switches.

The backup environment consisted of an EMC Data Domain DD160 solution, replicated to a secondary site to another DD160, using VEEAM as the backup software.

The project took approximately four months to implement and went live in the autumn of 2012.

Solution Benefits – Technical

This solution has delivered significant technical benefits, including:
•    Flexible, highly redundant, high performance server environment which allows the integration of additional applications over time.
•    Reliable, fast, backup solution which is highly scalable.
•    High performance SAN infrastructure which is highly scalable.
•    A scalable, reliable, remote backup solution to enable greater DR capability.

Solution Benefits – Commercial

•    Business risk from an IT perspective is now dramatically reduced.
•    Significant cost savings on disk upgrades and maintenance of older technology.
•    IT management overhead is very low.
•    Euromedic now has a flexible IT infrastructure that is capable of easy adaption as the business needs change and data grows.

Patrick Kane, Head of IT at Euromedic said, “The project has been a resounding success. Comsys were chosen to design and implement this system as it was essential to have a reliable supplier who could support us in the long run. It was also critically important that we experienced no downtime on the RISi application.”

“The project was completed in good time and on budget. We now have a server and storage infrastructure that is scalable and resilient, whilst delivering the high level of performance we require to support the business into the future,” he said.

Ben McGahon, MD of Comsys said, “This project was yet another example of how Comsys has used EMC storage and back up technology, combined with VMware, to provide a robust and highly scalable solution running a mission critical application.”

“The EMC VSPEX reference architecture allows us to deploy this type of solution safe in the knowledge that the customer is getting an infrastructure which is built using industry best practice and market leading technology,” he said.
